Took the tour of this deteriorating old structure that was built by the world renowned architect himself, Frank Lloyd Wright. The building has been a joke since it’s inception. It never had the railroad access to the warehouse it was designed to be. It was blocked by the wealthy Krouskop mansion, which still sits behind it. The exterior is so dilapidated and literally falling to the ground, however these dreamers, with your donations, are trying to make this edifice a Diamond in the rough for visitors and locals to enjoy. I believe that FLW said it himself the best, “everything that is build from the ground shall one day return to it”. And so be it, this monstrosity should allowed to become another pile of rubbish littering the streets of Richland Center.

While driving through the town, we saw a sign “Frank Lloyd Wright”, followed it and were very lucky to arrive just in time to join a tour of the warehouse.
Our guide was 83 year old Mike who was genuinely an expert on the building and was very enjoyable in his speaking style.
The tour starts with an interesting fifteen minute film about Richland Center, the German family, and FLW.
Mike was extremely knowledgeable and was glad to answer any questions.

If you're a follower of Wright, then you want to see all of his buildings. This one is a cold storage warehouse with a Mayan frieze. The building is very interesting....opening hours are limited....some tours available....mostly summer hours. Monies are being raised for restoration which is extremely expensive....the mecca for Wright lovers is in Spring Green and this would make an interesting side trip

IF you go on a Sunday and can do a tour, then it's worth the extra few minutes drive from Spring Green to Richland Center. Our tour guide was knowledgeable and passionate about the building and it's history, as well as being actively involved in the restoration process. I'm not sure I'd make the trip if you can't do a proper tour, as the information you learn about both German and Wright is quite fascinating. With the guide, it's easy to imagine what the place would have looked like had it ever really come to fruition.

Went to the open house and we were impressed with all the history within the building, the displays, photo viewings, and short movie that told about FLW early life in Richland Center Wisconsin

We were on a road trip concentrating on Frank Lloyd Wright, so a trip to Spring Green was required. We felt we must drive a few extra miles to go to Frank's hometown of Richland Center and see the A.D. German warehouse. Amazing building built in 1915 and still looks wonderful.

This Warehouse might not look much nowadays but when it was constructed, it was ahead of its time with its bold look inspired by the Mayan culture. Such type of Mayan-look was a phase of Frank Lloyd Wright's architectural journey where there were a handful of his creations still in possessions of private people in Los Angeles. It's bittersweet to note that this Warehouse never got finished as it coincided with the Great Depression, and the owner then, A.D German had run out of money. Still, many of FLW's signature styles were there for you to see such as the inverted triangles structural columns that withstood the weight of the building (that could also be seen at Racine and Taliesin too); the slither thin opening that let in the light into the warehouse and yet, not compromising the security of the building from thieves; the association of the building with the owner's fondness of music (and FLW too). It so happened that when we were there on the top of the warehouse, we were pointed to a giant moth that tried to blend in with the texture of the material surface. As we got talking, out of coincidence, by chance, we realised that the kind lady was the great grand daughter of AD German herself. As the story went, the adjacent building and this Warehouse has since been bought by a developer, and there was this scheme to try to crowd fund to get sufficient money to revamp the Warehouse. Yes, it's in the vicinity of not less than US$3 million. Hopefully, it would be converted into a hub of Richland Center where restaurants, pub, club, conference center could be held. One shall remain hopeful that this might just become a reality someday. As it stands, the Warehouse badly needs sprucing up. There's only a souvenir shop in the middle of the first floor, a mini cinema at the back to show the origin of the Warehouse, and story after story of empty space with mouldy presentation boards that were donated here by the deceased Mrs. FLW. As a testament to the growth of American architectural journey, this is a journey that needs to be taken but only for the architectural enthusiasts.

We were not able to go inside the building, as it is only open are specific days. However, the outside of the building was pretty cool and unique for the area. A must see for FLW fans, as it is not like all the houses he built. I would be interested in returning when the building is open to the public.

I'd not picked up on this until we visited Taliesin - it's a warehouse designed by Frank Lloyd Wright in the Mayan style - and it, sadly, bankrupted Mr German - not unheard of with FLW I'm afraid. That said, the preservation group working on it are doing an exemplary job - we didn't stay for the full tour but they were fgood enough to show us the film that had been made of the history of the building and Mr German's challenges in building it. If you've got as far as Spring Green on a FLW trip do make the effort to see this.

The society to save the German Warehouse does an excellent tour. If you are in Spring Green, et al, doing the Frank Lloyd Wright Tour, do go the extra 20 miles to see the German Warehouse in Richland Center, FLW's hometown. It is open Sundays and the first Saturday of the month for the summer and fall.
It is ten bucks; but, it is for a good cause if you are an architectural aficionado. Plus, as a bonus, they have a swell little gift shop.
