The USS Recruit was less than a five minute walk from the Liberty Station Courtyard hotel along the Esplanade.

I did a quick walk around the training ship and from the outside it looked to be in good shape. Flags were up along with the gangplank but it seemed odd that the anchors were disconnected.

Next to the California Registered Historical Landmark sign was another sign indicating that the USS Recruit was open on Saturday and Sunday from 12-4pm. Too bad only here during the weekday.

Have been to San Diego many times but recently became aware of this 2/3 scale Navy Ship that was used for training from 1949 to the 90's. Easy parking and a great adventure to see.

Takes less than an hour to walk around, no you can not get inside.

While visiting Liberty Station- San Diego if you’re interested in Navy history this is a great stop! Plenty of parking close to ship. This ship was commissioned on July 27, 1949. It was commissioned for 18 years, for much of that period it was the only landlocked ship to hold that status in the U.S. Navy. It was used to train Recruits.

She’s an impressive sight on land for sure.
She was built to scale, two-thirds the size of a Dealey-class destroyer escort. She sits at the (Former Naval Training Center), San Diego. Before training was moved to Great Lakes. This ship assisted with the training of over 50,000 new recruits per year, the ship still stands showing Honor, Courage, and Commitment. She is currently unused, with the hope that she will someday become a maritime museum.

This ship has been part of Navy boot camp for decades. There are plenty of other posts with all the technical names and dates. She hoists her colors daily and can easily be seen from the road. There are also now plenty of commercial restaurants near by to have a meal and walk as long the ship and park.

I was in the area and decided to have a look. Interesting for the most part regarding its history. Good for a,ten minute break. Not something I would go out of my way to see.

I can remember going by here as a kid and always wanting to see it. I think it was nicknamed the "USS Never sail" back then. Anyway now it is in a tourist area of the old Naval Training Center. It is worth the short trip to see it. It isn't like you see these everywhere you go!

USS Recruit (TDE-1, later TFFG-1) was a landlocked "dummy" training ship of the United States Navy, located at the Naval Training Center in the Point Loma area of San Diego. She was built to scale, two-thirds the size of a Dealey-class destroyer escort, and was commissioned on July 27, 1949.[1] Recruit was commissioned for 18 years, for much of that period the only landlocked ship to hold that status in the U.S. Navy.

This is the only US Navy ship that never sailed! It was a training ship built for use on land. A pretty unique landmark that's kind of hilarious.
