Very interesting collection of desert plants. Botanical garden trail easy, but Modesto Springs Canyon trail not for the beginner. We are experienced hikers and the description we got was not correct. It was steep and rocky with many places having dangerous loose rocks. We both fell but survived with just scraped knees. I would rate this trail difficult, however, the geology was amazing. If you are inexperienced, stay to the top of the mountain trails. They offered fantastic views--especially the botanical garden trails.

Thank you for your review. We're delighted that you enjoyed the Botanical Gardens. The Modesta Canyon Trail is a rugged hike, but the trail is well maintained. We always caution hikers to watch for loose rocks, plus to know that the descent into the canyon is a steep one (200 ft. in a 1/4 mile distance). And, if you've forgotten your hiking sticks/poles, we have loaner walking sticks available. Along the canyon trail, visitors enjoy seeing a spring in the desert, the riparian setting with the enormous Texas Madrone and Tracey's Hawthorne, along with stunning vistas. Thank you, again! And wishing you Happy Trails wherever they may lead.

Definitely worth the stop. We spent a couple of hours hiking and found the trails to be well maintained and markers easy to follow. Afterwards we walked through gardens area.

We spent about 2 hours there hiking and enjoying the gardens.
We are active people but not necessarily hikers so we chose the Clayton’s Overlook trail. I would recommend going before the heat of the day and take water.

We're thrilled to hear that you enjoyed your visit to the Chihuahuan Desert Nature Center & Botanical Gardens. Your choice to hike Clayton's Overlook Trail was an excellent choice. Although it ascends 220 ft. to the hilltop geology exhibit, the incline is much gentler than the 1/4 mile, 200 ft. descent into Modesta Canyon. Clayton's Overlook Trail is stunning but sometimes missed by folks who opt to hike the canyon. We agree that the best time to hike in the summer is before noon. Although our temperatures are lower than the rest of the Southwest region, you can feel the Sun's intensity at our elevation of 5,100 ft. Happy Trails!

This is a great stop from Alpine to Ft Davis. So many native plants to see. Trail was about 3/4 or 1 mile self paced with benches if you need a rest.

Thank you for your review. The Botanical Gardens that you visited feature plants that grow natively in the TransPecos Region (the area from the Pecos River to the Rio Grande). Visitors are often surprised to see the vast variety of plants that are native to the region. We're delighted you enjoyed your visit! Happy Trails!

My wife and I are very nature-oriented and this place is a favorite of ours. Very good signage on all plant exhibits. Cactus collection is world-class. Include this place in your itinerary for a visit to the Big Bend area. If you are interested in native plants (especially cacti), you won’t be disappointed.

Second visit here. There are some nice trails and scenery to see, especially if you climb up one of the trails. There is also a cactus garden and a bird blind.
Admission is very reasonably priced.

What a great side trip while we were in the Fort Davis / West Texas area. First, the greeter in the lobby was the sweetest most helpful guide. She certainly showed her pride in the garden and shared so much information with us !
The garden was well organized and labeled leading out to the Cactus Museum and Mining Exhibit. What a fantastic collection of cactus 🌵!
I would definitely recommend visiting this not for profit garden if you are in the area.

Thank you very much for your review and your recommendation! We're delighted that you felt welcomed from the moment you walked through the front doors! You can tell how everyone on the team loves where they are and what they do. There is more to come in the garden this spring. We are nearing completion of the Native Grasses Exhibit, along with adding some fabulous plant labels and interpretive panels. We hope you can make it back when the garden starts leafing out (mid-April), and you get to visit through the summer when the entire site is at its prettiest and summer temperatures will be in the 80s. Wishing you happy trails wherever they may lead. The CDRI Team

An excellent place for hiking and visiting and watching the desert plants and animals in the area. Located in the foothills of the Davis Mountains at an elevation of 5,100 ft. A place for a cactus botanical garden and bird watching.

We're delighted to learn that you enjoyed your visit! We agree that the Chihuahuan Desert Nature Center & Botanical Gardens is an excellent place for hiking (with about 5 miles of trails), and the Botanical Gardens have a collection of plants from throughout the Trans-Pecos region. If you arrive early, you might see some of the region's wildlife! We agree with you that there's a lot to see and do! Thank you very much for your review!

We are delighted that you enjoyed your visit. We all love our Head Gardener, Faith. Glad you got a chance to meet her! We can tell you saw the charm of the nature center & botanical gardens. Went here for the first time and my first hiking experience. It was very beautiful and relaxing. There is definitely a lot to see. The cactus green house was amazing as I never knew there were so many varieties. I only seen Mule Deer but I didn’t go on the two longer hike paths. I’m sure during the spring the botanical Gardens are more beautiful as right now a lot of plants are dead for winter.

Thank you for posting a review! We know that takes time to do, so please know how grateful we are that you are sharing your experience with fellow travelers. We're delighted that you enjoyed your first visit to the Chihuahuan Desert Nature Center & Botanical Gardens, and we hope you will make many return visits in the future. Although it's pretty in winter, the site begins to look beautiful by mid-April, gorgeous in May and June, and spectacular by mid-July through August! The great news about July and August is that the daytime temperatures are generally a cool low-to-mid-80s, and the hills are green, green, green! No kidding! Seeing wildlife is always unpredictable. Two days ago, a visitor posted having seen, on their hike, a mule deer buck and six does, five Montezuma Quail, a herd of Aoudad (Barbary sheep) with a couple of lambs/kids, and a cottontail rabbit (It sounds like I might be singing "The 12 Days of Christmas). :) We look forward to your return visit. Again, thank you!
