The fort as at the mouth of a beautiful box canyon surrounded by mountains with large rock outcroppings. There is a mixture of restored sections as well as areas with only building foundations or parts of buildings still in place. The information exhibits and signage were very helpful and one could really understand how this fort was a staging area, center for the military, part of a town.

We didn't expect much, but we were seduced. It's a very nice place. The restored sites are fine. A lot of infographics. The decor is grand. It's part of the history of the USA. To do around here!

My family enjoyed exploring the fort.
The little museum was informative and the restrooms were clean.
The fort hospital may have been our favorite part with the stories of patients and the treatments and outcomes.

What an interesting story. Fort Davis was established to protect westward bound settlers, freight wagons and mail coaches during the Indian wars of the 1800's. It straddles the old San Antonio- El Paso Trail. After the Civil war it was the post of the Buffalo Soldiers and is one of the best examples of a frontier fort in the Southwest.

We were surprised how many of the buildings had furnishings in them. It made them seem like they were still occupied. Plan on doing some walking as many of the buildings are a ways apart.

We noticed the fort's enlisted men's quarters as we drove into the park and remarked on how well preserved they were. The visitor center has a video about the fort and should be watched before viewing the rest of the visitor center museum and then the fort. The museum explained the reason for the fort (to keep travellers safe on the San Antonio/El Paso road). Several buildings were able to be viewed inside and some were reproductions. The hospital building used an interesting way to give facts by presenting several sick or injured real persons from the past and told you how they were cared for and the outcome of the care as you walked from room to room. Many black men were soldiers here and the term, Buffalo Soldiers, was coined by the Native Americans.

This is an excellent, well restored, and educational place. The visitors center is large with lots to do and see. This is a total immersion into the time and struggles of the people responsible for protecting this area. If you love history you will enjoy the interaction of the displays and the artifacts displayed

The historic is nice. Some buildings to look at and enter. It's very basic. There is some excavation going on. You pay an entry fee to walk the grounds.

Beautiful setting, surrounded by tall mountains. Well-preserved, historical place. Lots of walking required to see it all.

Ft. Davis was an important Civil War site. When we arrived, we were greeted by two friendly park rangers on horseback. They invited us to pet their horses. There are several historic buildings you can tour. There is also a small museum including a movie. If you enjoy American history, this is definitely worth a stop. There are also good hiking trails in the area.

I have family who lived in Fort Davis back about 100+ years or so ago. I’m curious about the cemetery located there ~
▫️what was/is the name of this cemetery?
▫️are any records on the folks that were buried there?
▫️what cemetery/ies they were relocated to?
Thanks!

I visited there last spring and found the people who sell the admissions and the person impersonating the soldier to be extremely knowledgeable. I'll bet they can tell you.
