I had very little knowledge of what happened at this battle site before I visited. Great movie and museum. Make sure to take the scenic drive and also walk down to the river and among the battery. Keep an eye out for eagles soaring overhead. Have been to numerous battlefields and I thought this one was very well preserved and it was easy to imagine exactly what happened here. Extra fun in reading the tidbit about Grant and the cigars and reading the little facts on/near the cannons at the battery. Absolutely a Do-Not-Miss if you are anywhere near the area.

As of May 2024, the visitor's center is still under renovations, so there is not really a museum. The park is still open, and the driving tour is easy to follow.

While at some point I think a lot of these NPS battlefield sites blend together a bit, unless of course you have a personal interest in some part of it. While this site seemed somewhat standard, walking around did emphasize the naval and logistics aspects of war more than other landlocked sites seem to do. Speaking of logistics, their visitor's center was under construction and the hikes did not seem all that interesting. But the free audio tour of the battles was worth it.

Great place to learn about some Tennessee history. Beautiful scenery of the river. Had a peaceful picnic along the river and did a little bird watching. Got to see the cannon firing demonstration. Very exciting and loud! Nice little gift shop.

What is so interesting and compelling about Fort Donelson National Battlefield is the Cumberland River that runs through it, how a visitor in 2023 can stand on a battlement and visualize the Confederate cannons firing at the Union gunboats on February 11-16, 1862. The 1,319-acre park, which includes the hotel in nearby Dover, Tennessee, where Union general Ulysses S. Grant issued his famous "unconditional surrender" demand to Confederate General Simon Bolivar Buckner, preserves much of the original battle site, including the river batteries and the eroded remains of the fort. However, the area in which the Confederates attacked on February 15 is largely in private hands and occupied by residential development. The Cumberland River was dammed in the 1960s and currently is referred to as Lake Barkley, a popular recreational destination. It covers an area roughly similar to the original river while at flood stage, which it was during the battle. The battle was significant because it made Grant a national hero, led to the capture of Nashville, Tennessee's capital and industrial center, and secured control of the Tennessee and Cumberland Rivers for the Union. There is a six-mile hiking trail that enables visitors to explore all of the highlights of the park. In addition, the Fort Donelson National Cemetery contains 670 Union dead.

I had read about this pivotal battle, but it wasn't until I got here that I realized the scope and importance of it.
The displays around the park do a good job of explaining what happened here. Seeing the battlements and the river views impressed me. You can almost feel what the soldiers situations were when you walk were they walked.

Lots of history and information regarding the Civil War battle site. Most is about the Confederacy with a little on the Union. We didn’t get to see everything as we ran out of time. The ranger at the visitor center was helpful and very friendly. Would like to go back and see it all.

Great hiking loop trail, about 3 1/2 miles, that takes you past all the highlights of the park. Lots of history and interesting geography. Enough uphills and downhills on the loop to count as exercise. It does require traveling off the beaten path to get to, but we thought it was worth it. The park ranger was excited to share the history of the battles and was very personable.
We were surprised, however, to find the prominent large monument honoring the Confederate Army, given modern consciousness.

Wonderful civil war sites. Lots of history and important events took place here. You can almost feel the presence of the young soldiers on the grounds.
