Must visit location if you’re in the Rio Grande valley to bird. Was there 10 years ago. Sadly, can’t visit the area today due to the invasion

Hundreds of very loud Parrots after sunset before dark. Safe well lit park. Listen and huge loud flocks of parrots flyin from various directions every night after sunset just before dark. easier to see the ones that land on wires first. They all ultimately roost in trees in middle of park. More than 100 come in.

If you are a bird enthusiast or even a bit interested you must go to Oliveira Park at sunset. We were completely caught off guard by the sheer number of parrots coming in to roost in the park. What a delight! They are not too intimidated by people and landed in a tree right next to us, there were thousands of green parrots. I would go again just to watch them, they were quite entertaining.

Fun time viewing parrots gathering to roost. We arrived about 20 minutes before sunset and only had to wait a few minutes for parrots to start arriving and initially perched on powerlines along El Paso Rd. There are walking trails, so you can arrive a little earlier and start a walk as evening draws near.

The evening that we were there, the birds began assembling near the Corner of the Park where there is a skate park. So parking on that corner provides a prime location. The parrots moved into the trees in an adjacent neighborhood and then worked their way back into trees within the park.

Early in the process, viewing is best from across El Paso Rd. As the birds move into Oliveira Park, viewing from skate park is probably best.

So so many south taxes specialties to see and when the sun is setting the quest continues. Check when the sun will set and 15 minutes prior, I recommend you arrive at this urban park and listen for the feint squawking that very gradually grows to the loud calls of red-crowned, red-lored and white fronted parrots arriving for their evening roost atop the palm trees. Flocks were not difficult to find. We simply parked in the parking lot waited and listened. The hundreds of parrots were easily found due to their loud squawking. Very easy birding indeed.

Bring your binoculars, insect repellent and a spotting scope if you have one.

We came for the parrots! We can't speak for the rest of the park, but easy to find/park and great spot to watch the parrots come and roost for the night. Lots of kids playing sports and on the playground, and seemed like a nice place.

There seems to be lots of soccer going on at this park, but it also has lots of other activities as well. Swimming pool, tennis to name a few. There are also panic tables to have a lunch or enjoy some food.
We drove around the entire park looking for a good place to park so we could walk with trees nearby. We were looking for birds because we had heard there are red crown parrots that fly in each night. It turned out we were not the only ones there looking for them.
As predicted - they flew in just before dusk. You cannot miss the noise. It was a very neat experience and I am glad we came to check it out. We enjoyed walking around. There are lots of trees that provide good shade. ( Yes - there are bathrooms too)
