The Brownsville/South Padre Island area is known for a few things, particularly as a spring break destination for college students. There is, now, another landmark that puts this region squarely on the map: the tiny town of Boca Chica is the home for a space rocket production facility as well as the home of a launch site for those rockets. Rising above the surrounding flat coastline (next to Mexico) is an ultra-high-tech industrial facility built by Elon Musk's SpaceX corporation.
We didn't know what to expect as tourists. The SpaceX website says they do not give public tours. As this is high-tech stuff, we expected that we would only get the barest of glimpses....... elaborate security precautions (e.g., cameras and drones). However, when we got there, we were able to see a great deal just from the road. From a distance of about a quarter mile, we saw 4 rocket ships being readied for launch. We saw the tall buildings used for constructing these rockets.
We also saw what we assumed to be the town of Boca Chica, a residential neighborhood next to the production facility. One clue that SpaceX employees were living there is that many driveways had Teslas in them (one had a Tesla cybertruck), and those driveways had electrical charging stations attached to the houses. We even saw a house that had a child-sized Tesla cybertruck.
We had heard that at one point Elon Musk had lived in Boca Chica in a "micro house," manufactured by Boxabl. We saw at least two neighborhoods of Boxabls in Boca Chica, fascinating.
About a quarter of a mile down the road from the production facility and the Boca Chica neighborhood was the SpaceX launch site. To our astonishment, this is right next to the public road! There are 2 towers, as well as other space-oriented structures in the launch pad area, extremely interesting.
If that were not enough, a further one quarter mile down the road is a public beach, Boca Chica State Park. We were able to drive our rental car out on the sand without any difficulty. It is my guess that the residents of Brownsville use this as one of their primary beach accesses, a place to swim/sunbathe while looking up at rocket ships nearby!
We had only found out that there was a public beach by accident: on the way back to Brownsville from Boca Chica, there is a police roadblock on the main road. The state trooper on duty informed us that there was a beach next to SpaceX which was occasionally used by people entering the country illegally from Mexico.
This trip is a must-see attraction when in south Texas, educational, beautiful, and exciting.
