While visiting the area we found J.E.E.P. on trip advisor. The animal lovers that we are we knew we had to visit. We were blown away at how much effort and care George and Loretta put in to taking care of the animals and the facility. After visiting we volunteered for the last two weeks of our vacation. When volunteering you get close to the animals, George, and Loretta. To say the least I cried our last day saying goodbye to all. We did however have the privilege of adopting a dog, so we did get to bring a little of the Hilltop home to Oregon. I will tell anyone that is going to Mexico in the La Penita area that the J.E.E.P. is a must do/see. We loved it and can’t wait to go back! Volunteers and donations are always welcome.

We went for a tour and to walk some dogs but we got so much more. The facility alone is amazing, animals well cared for and George is quite the host, so much so that I left with a dog we fostered for our month stay in La Penita!! The refuge is a must see when in the area but I would get there early so you have ample time to see the facility and still visit the numerous dogs, cats and horses. I would pack a lunch next time so we could stay and visit longer. Please also make a donation as we learned all the proceeds go to the rescues which come in often.

P.S. We adopted the dog ❤️

My husband and I visited JEEP today, our first visit in several years. George welcomed us on arrival and gave us a tour. The facility is looking fabulous. There are many improvements since our last visit. It's definitely a labour of love and provides a much needed refuge for animals in need. A worthwhile visit for animal lovers.

This is a must go place when you go to la Peñita de Jaltemba. J.E.E.P. is a sanctuay for animals that have been rescued and giving a new oportunity in life. As we walked into this place, we experienced the gratifying feeling of petting and playing with these criatures that the only thing they are expecting is visitors to share their time and support with them. The place is clean, nice and well bult, with a beautiful view to the Jaltemba bay. Highly recommeded.

Saturdays are open visit days at the Refugio where George and Loretta rescue animals (who then rescue people). You can walk or cuddle one of the many animals, volunteer in other ways and/or adopt a new friend.

The Refugio will put any donations directly to work in the wonderful care of these animals left alone and often sick. They also run a free spay and neuter clinic.

While vacationing in La Penita my partner and I went up on Tuesdays and Saturdays to volunteer. George and Loretta put us to work socializing the large dogs. A few of them were easy to work with and ready to adopt. The majority needed some positive experiences with people to build their confidence. After several hours over the 4 days there we could definitely see some improvement. The more people that go up there and give these dogs positive exposure the better they will do. If you not comfortable working with dogs or have the time to do so, consider donating to this organization.

I went to Hilltop Refugio and it was truly amazing. As humans we have the luxury of being self reliant. For most of these recused animals they live and thrive by relying on us. At this refuge not only are the animals amazing but so are the people! I hung out mostly with the dogs there. They can feel all the emotions like fear, sadness, happiness and love and when people, like the ones working and volunteering at the refuge, give them a safe place it’s a magical thing. Same goes for the adorable cats and horses there! It warms my heart to know that places like Hilltop Refuge exist. Because of them, these animals have a chance to love and to be loved! They’re all enjoying themselves at a beautiful, caring, well kept facility, surrounded by kindness while they wait for a forever home!

I am so glad we made the decision to take a Saturday morning tour of this amazing facility! It is incredible how much work has gone into creating a beautiful, functional and comfortable environment for rescued horses, dogs and cats. The couple who started this place from scratch ten years ago after hearing about some starving horses are so inspiring, and they work with a wonderful collection of amazing volunteers that are so devoted to the happiness and health of the animals. I highly recommend visiting this place (and making a donation!) My husband and my sons and I were so glad we did.

The January 23, 2023 fundraiser was well organized and fun with volunteers running bake sale, silent auction, 50/50 draw and tours of the facility with all the puppies, dogs, cats and horses. There were live bands playing country, rock and blues music. We had fun dancing and meeting new people. Lovely barbeque and cash bar. An amazing event from 2:30pm until 6:30pm. Will definitely attend next year! This animal refuge relies on volunteers and donations.

Wow… There are people and places on this earth that are delivered straight from heaven and this location has both. The dedication and commitment to not only rescuing these animals but housing them for life, if adoption doesn’t happen, is awe inspiring.

I was expecting something depressing. Something more like the animal shelters where I live but this was nothing like that. This place has happy animals who have their space and socialization. They run around and play. Volunteers walk them to get them more “adoptable friendly”. They get medical treatment (and offer spay and neutering programs to the community), food, shelter and above all love. Oh and did I mention beach days?!

If you do nothing else for the benefit of your soul on your trip, visit this facility. You will leave kinder and more loving.

Oh and please consider donating…
