We drove past these statues showing a woman holding a flag surrounded by young children. We were on a tour of Parral and didn't stop, but I was curious to learn more about them so I did some research. I'd encourage visitors to read the full story on Wikipedia; here's a snippet:
Griensen's act of heroism is framed in the so-called punitive expedition or third American intervention, intended to capture Pancho Villa for his attack on Columbus, New Mexico ... The inhabitants of the city disagreed with the occupation of American soldiers and began to gather expressing their discontent. Elisa Griensen, who was 28 years old and studying in the U.S., was vacationing in the city and present among the protesters ... Not receiving [military or government] support, Griensen requested the support of the people of the square and went to the elementary school where she took the national flag ... With the children and some women, Griensen headed for the U.S. troops and the crowd followed, shouting support for Villa and Mexico ... Some children began throwing stones and were seconded by some women. The first shots against the soldiers were made by Griensen. The U.S. troops, seeing that they were attacked with shots, fled abruptly, followed by protesters and Mexican soldiers, who chased them to the town of Santa Cruz de Villegas ... This act of Griensen against the U.S. troops has been considered as determining the failure of the expedition headed by General Pershing.
