My family absolutely loved the Chi-Cheemaun. I had always heard how beautiful it was. The scenery and the boat was fabulous.

I've traveled on this boat several times and enjoyed every trip. The staff are highly organized, online booking is easy and everything went without a hitch. Being an adult, I appreciate the fact that they upper decks are licensed for alcohol so a weary traveler like myself can enjoy a beer responsibly while relaxing on the voyage.

The last trip of fall for the MS Chi-Cheemaun ferry, which usually travels back and forth to South Bay Mouth, Manitoulin Island, is the Fall Colour trip from Tobermory to Owen Sound, where it is safely stored for the winter months.
We took this trip, this fall. Getting up early, we hit the road around 7 am to arrive in Owen Sound for 9 am. Arriving close to 9, we were pleasantly surprised by the close parking availability, where we were to leave the car for the day, while we took a school bus from Owen Sound to the boat in Tobermory.
Seemed like a nice day, but it changed once we hit the bay, Georgian Bay that is. The wind was up, the lake was roaring. Now I am not the most boat comfortable person, but I found the trip to be great, not to cold to be outside, and nice and warm, T-shirt warm in the boats lounges.
For under $150. for 2, we enjoyed the trip, and the awesome buffet that was served in groups. They had a bar, with reasonable pricing, and an entertainer who kept us all entertained.
They also have a spring trip.
You have to register early to get tickets for this event, or you will be dis-appointed.

Having lived in Ontario all my life, I myself couldn't believe we had such a gem in our Province. Such a beautiful ride, flowerpot islands are simply breathtaking, water is crystal clear, hikes are amazing and of course the shipwrecks.

My husband and I go to Tobermory every year and this year we wanted to try the Sunset Dinner Cruise. We were pleasantly surprised at how cheap the dinner cruise was! This is very well organized and the meal was absolutely delicious! My husband and I were quite full from supper and didn't want to have our dessert right away. We were able to wait until we returned back to Tobermory to enjoy our dessert.
The weather was unfortunately terrible the day that we had booked, so we did not see the sunset. We did, however, get a great light show as the surrounding areas were lit up with lightning.
Every crew member and wait staff were absolutely amazing and very attentive to your needs. Will definitely look at booking this cruise again next year!

Always a fun ride but our first time driving onto the boat. Our kids loved the fact that the ferry is so big and they loved the model of it

We had two enjoyable crosssings on the ferry. Show up early, and know what kind of fare you're getting into if you're towing a travel trailer or anything large!
On your way up from the belly of the ship, you're sort of forced to make quick decisions about where to go...people start diverging this way and that through port-hole doors on their way up the steep steps.
Some "dog free" areas were apparent to us...others were not. We ended up with relatively peaceful spots to sit near the rear of the ship (a bit clanky and noisy back there, but not a lot of people), but it might have been nice to explore other parts of the ship as well.
Some additional, and obvious, signage concerning which doorways and which decks that dogs are and are not permitted on would have been helpful to us. As first-time (and second-time on our way back) passengers, we felt sort of "lost" as to where we should/could go.
All in all, great scenery and a very well-trained and efficient staff.
P.S. About 45 mintues into the passage, people seemingly get antsy and start to explore the ship. Kids start to run laps around the deck...people start walking their dogs around...hold onto your dogs and pay attention the entire trip for your dog's safety...several unexpected canine encounters popped up about halfway through both of our passages.

MAKE A RESERVATION. That is the best thing you will get out of this review. I almost missed my reservation time and there were lots of others that wanted my spot. The signage could be a lot better at both ends of this boat ride. They assume too much that people have done this before so Heads Up!!
Did I save money by not driving around the lake? I think so but no real stats.
Once on the boat it was drab and nothing to do but sit and wait. A fairly boring event.

We rode the MS Chi-Cheemaun on our way from northwestern Ontario back to Toronto, for the experience and to get a break from driving. We are glad that we did. The service was professional, friendly and got us on and off the ferry quickly. The ferry itself was spacious, with many options for sitting indoors and out on the decks. We settled into outdoor Algonquin chairs and watched the sun beginning to set while sipping beers from the cafeteria/lounge. Even in late September, it was sunny and warm enough. We were sitting starboard to enjoy the late afternoon sun while travelling toward Tobermory; portside would have given us views of land but far less sun. On a Friday in late September, the ferry was almost full. The website tells you to arrive at least an hour prior to sailing. Take that seriously; we arrived exactly one hour prior to sailing - only two cars lined up behind us after that, and the attendants seemed to have been somewhat concerned whether we would show up or not. If you are thinking that the ferry might save you driving time, keep in mind that you must be at the docks at least an hour prior to sailing, and the sailing itself takes about 1-3/4 hours. But for the experience alone, we would definitely do this again.

Hi Can I bring my dog above deck on the South bay mouth ferry to Tobermory

Yes you can as long as the dog is on a leash and well-behaved. There is a specific lounge for pet owners, but you can walk the dog basically all over the ship except the cafeteria and except lounges that have carpet. Otherwise they must be in your vehicle down below and you cannot go down there while the ship is underway.

What is there to do within walking distance once you arrive to Manitoulin Island?
We are staying in Tobermory, and taking the ferry just for the experience. There is a 4 hour gap between when we arrive to manitoulin and when we can return. Are there any beaches or trails close by? It is $150 just to bring the vehicle so we are trying to avoid that cost. Thanks in advance!
what is the price and schedules for a 34ft motorhome from Manitoulin island to Tobermory on sept 6, 2020

We are planning a trip at the end of July to take the ferry to manitoulin island. We don’t want to drive, so we were thinking of taking our petal bikes. How does that work? Do you have to pay for the bike? How do you make sure someone won’t take it?

I believe there is an extra fee for your bikes as it wont be just a walk on tour. Bicycles and motorcycles are parked at the front of the boat. First to load up. There is plenty of staff to assist you. People are not allowed on the car deck while sailing. Also, for peace of mind there are security cameras everywhere on the car deck. Upon arrival they will make an announcement that people may go to their vehicles/bikes. I would recommend the trip and your bikes will be safe.
I am thinking of taking a same day walk in return ferry from Manitoulin to tobermory and back. What is there to do within walking distance from the ferry terminal in Tobermory.

As soon as we got off the boat, we walked to the booth to purchase our tickets for the Glass Bottom Tour. As we waited on the docks, there were a few little shops that we looks at and had a treat at the Beaver Tail Shop. On our return from seeing the ship wrecks and Flower Pot Island, we walked around a few more shops like the candy store :) and had lunch at the Crow's Nest before taking the boat back to the island. The scenery is truly something to see.
