Avoid this boat hirer at all costs for winter crusing, NO HEATING AT NIGHT whatsoever.... After a real crap year , health wise, we always wanted to go on the broads so thought we would pay a bit more and booked up an elite boat called "Gleaming light 2" for 10 days.. It boasted of warm heating for a cosy time. The photos looked lovely , all was good , or so we thought , onboard we were told we can't have the heating on at bedtime , due to carbon monoxide risks. Well this was winter, and the temperature dropped to zero..we got so cold we finished our holiday 3 days early. Yes the kind staff offered us a cottage for the remaining time, but the holiday was already ruined by then . We did write to Herbert Woods and got an reply saying basically they offered us the cottage , so they won't refund / compensate us anything. Ok, we weren't after a refund or compensation, but to be dismissed just like that is rude and not very professional , not only did we complain about the heating ( as we feel that is misleading at the very best ) but we also complained about the very rude man that showed us the " ropes" of the boat, he rushed through everything and was not at all friendly. We stayed the first night in the Marina as it was getting dark, and in the morning another boater told us the broads authority was going to lower the barrier at 11 am. due to high tides and salt levels, this was 10.20am and yet no one from the yard bothered to inform us of this, so we could have been locked in the marina for days..
The reception staff were friendly enough and helpful. The boat itself was excellent, roomy and light, easy to handle, but it's just the heating at night ( or should I say lack of init ) that was the killer.. We asked for our complaint to go higher to the directors, and to date , ( 3 weeks later ) they have not bothered to contact us , We have contacted trading standards about the misleading wording of the heating, so we will see what they say .. The heating was a big part of us booking it because it was winter , we would never have booked it if we had known ..

Just had a week in Herbert Woods Mallard cottage /chalet. Nice and warm and well equipped, had an excellent time. Bear in mind that Woods is a working boatyard so boats are being worked on on a daily basis but no problem to us The excellent Bridgestoned cafe is just opposite cakes to die for

A great holiday on the Norfolk Broads in a hired boat for a week....First time we booked with Herbert Woods.. We took our dog onboard and she loved it..although she wasn't supplied a life jacket as another boat hiring company do and it made our holiday a little more tense and we had to watch her all the time... The boat was clean throughout. It was a tired boat where the curtains were not fitting correctly and the pop studs didn't fit at all..Bedding was fresh but the bed was uncomfortable. Always had hot water for showers. We wasn't supplied with a hair dryer, you have to take your own travel hair dryer due to the wattage being lower, again this was supplied at the other boat hire...These issues didn't put us off boating and we would do it again.

An excellent trip from beginning to end, all the staff are fantastic and helpful. We had a problem with the boat we hired and it got fixed quickly with no fuss. The diesel deposit was worked out and the refund was generated the same day we finished our holiday. I really can not fault this company and I always tell the truth about these things, but Herbert Woods is a winner if only other companies did so well.

Commanding Light is a boat from the eighties/nineties with up to date engineering which operated well sadly however Herbert Woods do not seem to regard routine internal maintenance as a high priority so our boat was very tatty with rotten doors no hangers smelly uncomfortable loos etc etc. Nothing wrong with older boats if properly looked after just look up the road to Stalham. Real shame not everyone can afford new boat charter rates and cheaper should not mean shoddy!!
