Only spent 1 night with Daniel and Helen at their beautiful Bungalows. Right by a beautiful cove with ocean water hot springs and amazing sunset views. We did not snorkel because that day was a bit rough but heard there is a good reef. But spent the whole day relaxing at the beach and reading by the bungalows. Very nice manicured garden!
Bungalows are very nice, large and spacious, decorated with flowers and shells and local arts and crafts.
Daniel and Helen cooked amazing meals for us, served at their nice restaurant overlooking the beach. They very helpful and made our stay very special. Very quiet area!!! Will definitely spend more time there next time.
It is only a 15 min walk from the airport through nice forest but Daniel can also organize transport for you.
He even warmed up some water at the end of the day for us to wash up...way out his way!

This is definitely the place to stay on Ambrym. Fly to Craig Cove and walk to Terter Hotsprings or ask Daniel to arrange a car to pick you up if you have a lot of gear. To book Terter Hotsprings, text Daniel Terter on +678 549 7662.
We have a lot of great things to say about Terter Hot Springs and visiting Ambrym, including the Air Vanuatu twin otter planes that jag through other stops before you get to Craig Cove. We plan to create a Facebook page for Daniel Terter in the coming months with as much information as possible and photos so people can prepare a good trip.
Expect a truly off the beaten path authentic village experience with the novelty of thermal pools in the ocean (during low tide - morning is best) and a strenuous trek to magma spewing volcanos. Ambrym is for those seeking adventure, culture and nature.
Thanks to the people who have written reviews and provided Daniel's number. Without those we never would have stayed at Terter and had such a memorable experience.
We have travelled to many places around the world and stayed in luxury accommodation and basic accommodation in remote locations. This has definitely been one of the most unique places I have visited and given its short proximity to Australia, I think every adventure seeking Australian should hop on the 3-4 hour flight and experience the volcanoes of Ambrym from Terter Hotsprings.
Daniel (+678 549 7662) currently only has a basic Nokia phone so he has no email or ability to manage a webpage. Also, if he doesn't text you back, don't worry he will be at Craig Cove airport to greet you. The bungalows are only a 20 min walk from the airport so you could potentially just turn up. Someone at Craig Cove Airport (which is a grass air strip) will be able to give you directions or maybe even escort you there.
Cellular connectivity: There is some cellular connectivity on the island and along the trek up to the volcanoes! My partner was using his Telstra sim which would be connecting to any of the towers. I bought a Digicel sim. My understanding is that TVL coverage is better than Digicel on Ambrym and Santo. You can buy these sims and data packages from the airport at Port Vila. Bring an external battery pack for charging torches and phones etc.
Activities:
Volcano:The main attraction on Ambrym is the volcano trek. My partner and I did a strenuous one day return trek to Mt Marum leaving at 5:30am from Terter Hotsprings and arriving back at Terter Hotsprings at 4:30pm. That included the 1+ hr 4WD drive on very sketchy dirt roads from Terter to the starting point near Port Vatu. We walked non stop and at a fast pace. We are very fit and if we were the next level of ultra marathon fitness we could have also completed Mt Benbow within the day, as there was enough time, just not enough strength. When we arrived at Mt Marum we were super lucky to see the magma swirling around in the crater. We spent about 15 minutes there as it was quite windy and dangerous to hang about on the edge. Daniel can organise all the activities and take you up to Mt Marum and Benbow. He lead our trek and walked bare foot and in thongs, with a machete, for the 8 hours with loads of energy to spare. Nuts!!! It also makes you wonder why we have made ourselves such delicate creatures that need shoes. We are glad we did the one-day trek but we will go back and spend two days there camping on the ash plane and climbing into Mt Benbow to get closer to the lava. You will have to ask Daniel to organise a gas mask and expect to pay about 1500 Vatu each. Daniel and the porter didn't use one - I don't think that's wise because volcanic gases are toxic. Daniel has one gas mask but he had to hire the other two for us. I suspect there aren't a lot of gas masks going around in Ambrym. I hope to be able to get 3M in Australia to donate a few to the village. If you do a multi-day trek you will have to bring all supplies - a tent, sleeping bag, sleeping mat etc. It might be a good idea to also bring rice and food that you can heat while you are camping up there. Terter Hotsprings may be able to cater to a certain extent but it is better to rely on them for fresh fruit and food rather than bottle water and the bagged or canned variety of food as the store in Craig Cove won't really have much.
Hotsprings: These are super interesting. The bungalows overlook a private coral beach. At night it is high tide and in the morning around 8:30am the tide begins to retreat, leaving rock pools of warm water. The ground of the pools and some rocks that surround the pools feel glorious and warm to touch and you can lie on them covered in heated water. It's not clear whether the water is 100% sea water because it felt a little different on my skin. The temperature would be like a warm bath rather than a hot spa. In any case it feels glorious, my muscles felt relaxed after the tedious trek. One theory is that during high tide the water swirls around beneath the hot rock, with some making its way above the surface, so when the water retreats, warm salt water pools are left.
Reef: My partner went snorkelling around the reef. He said it was stunning - not like the great barrier reef in terms of colour, but full of fish. The lack of reef shoes were preventing me from doing this. It's not easy to walk on the coral beach and out to the ocean where you can swim off. The coral and the rocks can be sharp. My partner also recommends reef gloves and a rash vest to prevent cuts.
Fishing: Daniel can organise a fishing expedition which sounds fun.
Kava tasting: This was really nice to do after our trek. Kava has an analgesic effect which numbs the mouth and makes you feel "kind of drunk". Village people use it as a sleep aid. It wears off fairly quickly. I don't know why it is restricted for import and use in Australia - I believe WA have legalised it.
Rom Dance: If you stay long enough I think there are a number of village activities you can participate in. I think this is one of a few.
About Terter: Daniel Terter and his wife Helen operate Terter Hotsprings. They have 3 young kids. Helen is 26 and Daniel looks like he could be in his early thirties, maybe younger even. Daniel built the bungalows in 2000 and people started to stay there in about 2006. With no smartphone or computer it is difficult for Daniel to advertise the eco retreat. Daniel will become the Chief of the village next year and so money from tourism will go to looking after the people of the village, Craig Cove and West Ambrym. There are a number of bungalows with double sized beds (I don't know if there are single beds). They all have mosquito nets. There are two pit toilets, and one toilet that you can flush with a bucket of water. There is also a separate bathroom next door to the flushing toilet. Here you can wash with a bucket bath. Ask for hot water from the spring if you want a warm bucket bath. This bathroom is shared between the bungalows. There was nobody else staying there when we were there so we had the whole place to ourselves!
To set expectations, getting around Ambrym is not cheap, but then Vanuatu is not cheap compared to countries like Thailand. There are a list of prices advertised on the board in the restaurant of Terter Hotsprings. The price for accommodation is 3000 Vatu per person per night plus extras of around 500 or 600 vatu per person per meal not including drinks such as beer. Kava tasting is around 1000 Vatu per litre (I think - although we paid Daniel about 1500 VT for 500ml because I think he was supposed to give us beer as well). Activities are more. Helen prepares home cooked meals and they are superb, all made on a wood fired stove with of course fresh, locally sourced ingredients.
Daniel can take you up the volcano for 9,000 Vatu per person plus around 12,000 Vatu for 4WD transfers. This price may fluctuate due to fuel. The trek cost also includes a porter who can carry additional supplies such as lunch. The transfers are very expensive because the village needs to pay off the vehicle which cost them 3 Million Vatu plus shipping costs to get there. I remember calculating that the cost in AUD must have been well over $42k. With limited trade, I don't know how the village paid for it. I guess tourism is the best way to recoup this cost.
I would comfortably budget about 30 - 40k VT (AUD $500 p.p.) per person for 5 days depending on what you plan to do and how many people would share transfers. Text Daniel and confirm all costs ahead if possible because it depends on how many activities you want to do and how long you will be camping on the volcano vs staying at Terter Hotsprings. You may have to ask someone to take you out onto the reef as swimming out and back in high tide or low tide is not trivial, given the rocks and the coral.
Food & water: Helen prepares hot food. Rice, spinach and tomatoes cooked with garlic and onion. One night we ate a delicious salty fried tuna steak that was bought from the market - fished out of the ocean that day of course. Everything is presented beautifully in giant clam shells. There was always a lot of food and we couldn't finish it. In addition to the wonderful cooking, I would recommend to take a large amount of bottled water and aqua tabs just in case. We drank lemon water and a special green tonic soaked in the village water that Daniel made for us. We didn't get sick but it all depends on your gut bacteria and how it copes. I got very sick on Santo, arrived to Ambrym in poor health and left feeling great. I believe you can buy bottled water in Craig Cove also but it is probably very expensive. You may also want to take some snacks like chocolate or nuts and muesli bars for your trek.
Things to bring:
Inner sheet: We took a silk inner sheet with us which was great. The bed had a clean fitted sheet and pillow cases. There were two blankets but there were no sheets. We were given a towel each and I am sure Helen would give you another towel for the beach. All were clean. There was a mosquito net but the bungalows are dusty and so the mosquito net was a bit dusty. Next time when we stay for longer I will bring my travel mosquito net because of my allergies.
Mosquito repellant and mosquito coils. We didn't have too bad a time with mosquitoes. There were fewer mosquitioes here than on Santo. Still, it is nice to burn a coil. We sprayed ourselves with Eucalyptus Citriodora which is supposed to be as effective as DEET. We found it worked well.
Head torch with external charger and or candle, candle holder and lighter. There isn't any electricity. If you are lucky the solar battery may have enough charge to keep the light on for a half hour or so. Daniel turns the main on and off. It would have been nice to have a citronella candle burning.
Reef socks or shoes to wear in the reef. Snorkel mask.
half face gas mask for the volcano.
Soap, suncream and usual toiletries.
Thongs / flip-flops - I forgot mine and was really craving them as I had no slip on shoes to get in and out of when hopping out of bed and walking to the toilet or beach. The floor of the bungalows are not for soft feet.
All camping equipment if you plan to do the multi-day trek

I spent a week alone on Ambrym and spent the entire time snorkeling, climbing the volcanos, hiking the beaches, relaxing in Craig's Cove, and I did it all from Ter-Ter. The hot springs are incredible in the morning and the reef is filled with exotic fish, turtles, and other sea creatures. The bungalows at Ter-Ter are raw, natural, beautiful, and authentic. Daniel and Helen made me feel like family. They arranged everything from fresh flowers to volcano guides. Helen cooked 3 meals a day and every one of them was delicious and authentic. Daniel and I spent a few nights drinking kava in town with the locals and the local chiefs. Daniel himself might become a chief next year. Every non-local I encountered who wasn't staying at Ter-Ter was trying to get a bungalow there. It's an easy 20 minute walk to town and the airport, but miles away from the barking dogs in Craig's Cove.
Pictures don't do the island justice, I will never forget the roar of the lava lakes, the spectacular red fiery waves of lava crashing the walls of the caldera. I will never forget the children laughing on the black sand beaches, and the swordfish that got away. Ambrym is truly the gem of the Pacific.
Slept like a baby, Ate like a chief, Climbed like a pro, Thanks for meeting me at the airport Daniel!
IMPORTANT: Don't be alarmed by the language and technology barrier on Ambrym. Cell coverage on Ambrym is spotty at best and there are several tribal languages in daily usage. DO NOT USE MALAMPA TRAVEL. Simply text Daniel at +678 549 3700 AND +678 773 9455. Even if you don't hear back (I didn't), he will try to respond, and will meet you at the airport and/or make arrangements for you. In your texts, make sure you include your flight information so he knows when you're coming, and other important information like the number of people in your party.
Take leather gloves for the volcano climb, take a new water-proof tent if you can. Sturdy footwear is essential (even if the locals are barefoot or in flip-flops). Basically take any and all camping equipment for the volcano as the locally supplied gear is extremely worn and unreliable. Take your own snorkeling gear, the local gear can be old and hard to find, and you'll probably want to go into the reef several times per day at high tide.
There are a couple small stores in downtown Craig's Cove that sell bottled water, soda, crackers, and other sundries. And last but not least...
Take CASH, a lot of CASH. Lots of small bills. There are many stories of tourists running out of money in the out-islands of Vanuatu. There are no ATM's, no electricity. Nothing gets things done like cash. Anything from transportation by boat, bungalows, kava, trekking guides, doctors, water, and gear. It's all available if you have cash.

We stayed 4 nights at Terter after our volcano trail and is was wonderful! The four bungalows are located close to a private beach, which has a mix of coral and sand. One of the bungalows is directly at the beach front, the others are a bit higher located in a beautiful garden with mango, papaya and coconut trees. There is a shared bathroom/ toilet facility with flush toilet and two other separated toilets. Everything was clean and hot water can be pumped up if needed. Solar light is available in the evening, charging phone is 500vt.
Our room was simple, but clean and nice decorated (3500vt per person incl. Breakfast). Daniel and Helen are nice hosts! The food (600vt per meal) was delicious and changing every day. Specials like lobster are available sometimes. The small restaurant has a view to the beach.
Tours, like to local gardens, to Copra plantations, to lakes or to the volcanoes can be organised by the owner, as well as massages (1500vt), cooking course (500vt) or rom dance (6000vt). (Don't forget to bring enough cash to Ambrym!)
At low tide you can relax in the hot springs at the local, private beach, at high tide and calm sea you can snorkel perfectly in the untouched coral reef right in front of the beach! It was the best, healthiest reef we had ever seen! Ask locals, like Freddy, to show you the reef if you like to see shells or turtles.
It's 25min walk to Terter from CCV airport. In the neighbourhood there is a small shop in the village (in Craig cove is a "bigger" shop).
We recommend to book directly at the owner Daniel (call or send sms to +678 549 3700 or +678 773 9455) and NOT to book over malampa travel call centre (we booked over the call centre and the owner was not informed about our booking!).
We really enjoyed the stay at this location, it was quiet, peaceful and like a little paradise! Nambawan in West Ambrym!
