Stayed here one night while traveling through Indiana. The hotel was very nice and our room was great. The pool was not heated, it was much too cold to swim. And there were no towels. Typical hotel breakfast was good. The young lady at the front desk was very friendly.

Brand new hotel. Very nice except the pool was too cold to swim in. Call ahead to see if they replaced pool heater if going with children. The kids couldn't swim which was a great diappointment after a hot day on the ball field.

This is a standard, newer, Holiday Inn Express. It was clean, well staffed, and in a great location. There is not much bad to say about the hotel itself. The pool area is nice, if a bit small and echo-y. If you get a loud group of kids in there, and can be downright deafening. That leads me to my only read "bad": This hotel seems to attract a lot of traveling groups. I've stayed at this hotel for almost a week and a half, and I've seen multiple youth baseball teams, family reunions, and church groups. While this isn't the fault of the hotel's, these groups have all been incredibly loud, and incredibly inconsiderate of other guests. They have all often taken over the lobby, with kids running around, stretched out on the floor, jumping on furniture, etc. all while the parents/coaches sit drinking beer either in the lobby, or on the benches outside. The pool area was a warzone, with kids screaming and running at full speed around the pooldeck. I have younger children, and often had to ask a high-school age kids not to jump over them into the pool... No, this isn't necessarily a review of the hotel as much as a review of their guests, but I saw these groups enough to warn you that they are often there, and they are often ill-behaved. The fitness center was very well appointed, with TVs on each piece of equipment, and free, sealed earbuds if you need them. That was an excellent touch. The staff were all very friendly, very helpful. I have no complaints there at all. I do wish that there were more of them. With these big groups coming in, I had to wait in line for 10 minutes one afternoon when I was checking in because there was only one person working. I'm not sure that I ever saw more than one person at the desk during my stay. (I also asked for an additional blanket one evening at 8pm, and got a call at 10:30pm asking if I still needed it. I do not blame the staff at all, because I saw a huge baseball team come in right before I made that request - and I think she was alone to handle that check-in and bring me my blanket!) Overall, a really nice stay - the noise of these groups, while annoying, would not at all prevent me from staying there again. It's probably my go-to hotel in this area in this price-range, and will remain so.

We have always had great experiences at Holiday Inn Express properties. We chose this hotel because of that, choosing to pay a bit more than other hotels in the area. In addition, this is a fairly new hotel. So, we expected it to be pretty nice. Not all aspects met our expectations. Pros: -front desk staff was friendly and helpful -lobby was inviting and clean -24 hour coffee/tea station available -room appeared to be clean -comfortable beds -quiet room -good breakfast (many tasty options) Cons: -pool area was disgusting (wet towels everywhere, safety equipment taken down and strewn about the pool deck, dirt and/or feces on the pool deck - hard to tell but smelled like the latter) -informed front desk staff of the state of the pool area and was told someone would go take care of it, but no one came -bathroom near the pool area was unusable (feces smeared on the walls and light switch, urine on the toilet seat) -in room safe was locked upon arrival and staff was unable to assist in accessing/using it, while in our room staff were unprofessional by arguing with one another and using unprofessional language -handle fell off when I turned on the shower -shampoo/conditioner/shower gel dispenser fell off wall when attempting to dispense product If you do not plan to use the pool, this would be an acceptable place to stay. However, if you are traveling with kids looking forward to swimming, I would try somewhere else. Overall, there’s a lot of room for improvement at this location to meet Holiday Inn Express expectations/standards.

I might inform everyone that I have stayed for business as well as personal reasons, in over 200 hotel rooms through out the nation and have never had this experience. Our family and friends had reserved 6 rooms for a family event. Even though the rooms had all been booked for over three weeks, when my brother arrived, his confirmed request for a king size bed on the first floor was not available. He even called the day before his arrival date, as well as the early afternoon on his date of arrival to confirm his room would be available on his arrival at 5:30 PM. He was told on both occasions that his room would definitely be available upon his arrival. He even had the email written receipt confirming his reservation. After further investigation, in spite of his follow ups with the Holiday Inn Express front desk that afternoon, they rented his room and had given it to another guest. This resulted in my brother having to go down the street and rent a room from The Best Western. Needless to say, this was not a good experience for the other family members not having him with us at The Holiday Inn Express. In spite of this, when consulting with the management of The Holiday Inn Express, they stated they were fully aware of what had occurred and the inconvenience that they had caused. Even though my brother had the room reserved, the front desk had extended the stay of this existing guest that occupied the room rather than offering the existing guest another room within the hotel. What should have happened, was that my brother should have been given the room that he reserved. The existing guest occupying the room should have been offered another room within the hotel and their bags moved to that room honoring the guest's request for their extended stay. By honoring both requests, my brother would have been happy because he would now have the room that he had been promised, the guest would have been happy because they would have a room for their extended stay, and all of the family would have been happy with my brother and his being able to participate in all of the family festivities. Needless to say, if this is how is how the local management and front desk of this hotel chooses to treat its guests we will no longer be staying at this Holiday Inn Express in Merrillville, IN.
