My husband & I try to stay at b&b's whenever possible. We were having a hard time finding a place to stay near Colgate University when planning a college tour with our son. I'd called 3 other b&b's with excellent reviews, but they were all booked. I called the Adam Bowman Manor after seeing them listed on both the Colgate & Hamilton websites & reading two positive reviews on another review site. Were we in for a disappointment! First, they falsely advertise the distance to Colgate University. Instead of 35 minutes, it is an hour away. The exterior of the house needs A LOT of work - cracked paint, spiderwebs everywhere, etc. The interior was extremely dark & dingy, and the porcelain dolls everywhere were creepy. The room we were given was on the same floor as where the family lived. We needed to step over the 98 yr old aunt's oxygen line in the hallway, and the family bathroom and bedrooms were disgustingly dirty and messy - dirty toothbrushes laying out, used towels flung everywhere, laundry in all states and clutter piled on beds and on floors, etc. They told us that a cot would be provided in the room for our son, along with our queen sized bed. Now, our son loves camping, and has slept many times on cots in old army barracks, but the cot they provided him was about a foot off the floor & barely passable, even by his teenage standards. The bathroom in our room was so small, you couldn't stand and turn around in it with the door closed (for comparison, if anyone's ever had a standard room on a cruise ship, this bathroom was twice as small as those on the ship). Because of the distance to the university, we wouldn't even have been able to have breakfast there and make it to our tour on time, and the owner would not accommodate us even though we were the only guests there. Honestly, as filthy as the living areas were in the house, I wouldn't have even wanted to eat there. When we decided to check out because nothing was as advertised and below our standards/expectations after only leaving our suitcases there for an hour, the owner charged us the full amount - we offered to pay her half as a courtesy, but she would only accept the full amount - very bad business. We ended up bypassing our entire tour of Colgate, headed south that night toward our next college stop in PA, and stayed at a Quality Inn in Binghamton, NY that was at least more acceptable than the Adam Bowman Manor.…
