An outpost in the northwest corner of the Oklahoma since the 1890's, the re-born Merc features a store, a restaurant, Tent and RV sites and cabins in Kenton. After being closed for a number of years, the re-opened store has basic supplies you might not have realized you needed when you left home. You'll find basic food items, snacks, assorted clothing, toys, personal items, jumper cables, funnels, the list goes on... But life among the mesas of the Oklahoma Panhandle often reveals the unexpected. Like driving rainstorms that barely dampen the powdery dirt. Or dinosaur tracks that line a dry creek bed. Or the quarry that sourced much of fantastic dinosaur exhibits in the Sam Noble Museum of Natural History on the OU campus. Or a night sky so dark that it attracts one of the nation's largest star parties every fall. The Merc serves up a pretty good burger and a hearty frito/chili pie, just the reward one needs after the 8.5 mile round trip hike to the highest point in Oklahoma on nearby Black Mesa. We stayed a couple of nights in one of the small cabins at the Merc. It is compact (think Kamping Kabins at KOA), but has a microwave, sink, refrigerator, and bathroom w/ shower and AC. There is a larger cabin as well and both are on par, in terms of quality and comfort, with any cabin offered at any Oklahoma State Park. Kenton (and the Merc) is certainly worth a visit, a meal, and a stay when you take the trip to see the wildlife, explore the geology, walk the trip to the highest point in the state, take advantage of dark skies for some astronomy, and investigate the rich history of this part of No Mans Land.
