As an artist attending a week long workshop along with 18 others recently with one of the finest master artist and teachers around, I can tell you that there are no better hosts and planners than Bob and Monica here at their studio and B&B property. Wonderful staff served us with warm and gracious hospitality throughout our stay. Thank you all for an amazing and fulfilling "working" vacation of a lifetime! Hope to do it again soon!

Consejo sobre las habitaciones: Great place for an art workshop.

If you are an alcoholic with little regard for basics, and you want to spend 6x more than it would cost you to find your own accommodation, go for it. These people pulled the wool over our eyes and sold us something they do not deliver. We got sick in the first couple days trudging through waist high rank water and sitting through class with wet clothes.

The most difficult part of going to the Casa de los Artistas was the decision to go. After that, everything was easy. The only decisions needed were who to sit with at meal times, and whether or not to hike, swim, or take a siesta during breaks.
Bob and Monica know the area well and have thoughtfully included field trips to inspire, educate, and nourish. The couple are respectful of the village and work to insure that staff and guests are well taken care of.
Although easy to get to, this place is not like a tourist destination. One is not separated from the residents and daily life in the village: you walk the same paths as children going to school and residents going about their daily lives. You are aware that you are a visitor to another culture. I always felt safe, even when returning to my wonderful apartment after dark.
The opportunity to paint in the third floor open air studio (overlooking the bay) and learn from an accomplished instructor was the reason I chose to go. (Good to have a focus). The workshop was only "icing on the cake". I will treasure the whole experience and will be saving my pesos to return.

This is a great place! My second time here and it keeps getting better! Bob and Monica are the perfect hosts - making sure that everyone is well cared for while providing a rich cultural and artistic experience. The setting is an authentic fishing village and the people are warm and welcoming. Meals are delicious and the experience includes a boat trip along the coast, docking at a lovely island that retains natural beauty, another day at the botanical gardens, and a trip to a mountain town. Meals are delicious - a vegetarian cuisine ... although if you want meat you can walk across the water and sit on the beach for a delightful dinner. Highly recommend artworkshopvacations.com - the teachers are world class painters and Bob is the secret maestro there that can put it all together with kindness, soul, and spiritual presence that honors your intention. It doesn't get better than this!

With four painting workshops that spanned a couple of years at Casa de las Artistas in Boca Tomatlan, Mexico behind me, I can candidly review both the site and the quality of teaching with a degree of authority. My experiences are divided between the location and the art workshops. January and February are glorious. High 70s to mid-80s, blue skies and almost no rain. Others have written eloquently about what draws us to the place and I concur with their observations. Boca T is a small, vibrant, river community of hard-working, generous people. It is not slick, nor polished and sterile as so many resort destinations have become. If that experience is what you seek, look elsewhere.
The particulars are pretty clearly laid out in the materials provided by Bob Masla, host of the workshops at the Casa. Of course, reading the flyers and online information is a basic requirement which was obviously ignored by some visitors. Boca is a community divided by the river with a few paved streets on the north shore. The opposite river bank is physically challenging with a single, narrow path that greets you after crossing the suspension or the plank bridges. A brief wade across the stream via the sandbars at the mouth is a quick alternative for many. The residents share their love of music, their dogs and roosters and a lifestyle that is disappearing elsewhere while Casa hosts, Bob and Monica are equally generous with their dedication to an exceptional art experience.
The workshops and Casa de las Artistas: The caliber of instructors is exceptional. Daily sessions in the covered, open air studio are a joy and trips to nearby locations provide an abundance of painting challenges. Lodging is situated on both sides of the river in small apartments or guest rooms that are simple but comfortable.
Meals at the Casa are traditional Mexican dishes prepared onsite by an enthusiastic crew under the direction of a skilled cook. Fare is vegetarian, a fact clearly explained in the materials made available from the hosts. Seafood and meat meals are available at Ramones on the sandbar just across from the Casa and at local restaurants at the sites of painting day trips.
Twain always comes to mind when I return to the Casa and Boca, “Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry and narrowmindedness and many of our people need it on these accounts.” I look forward to my next trip.
